CEBU CITY – Even if some do not follow the dress code, it does not mean we should follow their example.
The Augustinian friars of the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu said this in reaction to the apparent breach of dress code policy committed by Sen. Imee Marcos who visited the church on Saturday, Jan. 10.
The Augustinian community said that pilgrims visiting the Basilica are still required to adhere to the dress code policy after netizens called the senator for her inappropriate outfit.
Marcos was among the throng of people who visited the Basilica, where hundreds of devotees flocked amid the Fiesta Señor celebration.
The lawmaker’s visit became a hot topic online, mostly calling her out for entering the church clad in sleeveless blouse, an outfit that is prohibited inside the church.
Netizens asked if the Basilica was selective in enforcing its dress code policy.
The Basilica emphasized that the policy applies to all and will continue to be imposed.
“We sincerely thank the vast majority of our devotees for your vigilance. By following the dress code, you show your love for the Holy Child and maintain the solemnity of our prayers,” said Fr. Jules Van Almerez, spokesperson of the Basilica.
“We remind the faithful that our standards of reverence do not change based on the actions of others. Even if some do not follow the dress code, it does not mean we should follow their example. We must remain humble and disciplined in our own conduct inside the church,” Almerez added.
