Veteran mentor Juno Sauler takes on a new role as the new head coach of the Gilas Pilipinas youth men’s basketball team, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced recently.
The 52-year-old Sauler, who served as an assistant in collegiate and professional ranks, is set to take over from LA Tenorio.
Tenorio, who is the Magnolia head coach in the PBA, will remain in the Youth program as an adviser.
“The SBP welcomes coach Juno into the Gilas Pilipinas Youth Men’s team and thank coach LA Tenorio for his stint as head coach,” said SBP President Ricky Vargas.
“Coach Juno brings a wealth of experience and deep connections nationwide that will help him put together the best team possible,” he added.
With his appointment, Sauler, a tactician as well for the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers in the UAAP, leads the composition of the youngsters who will vie in the upcoming 2026 SEABA Under-18 Championship.
Sauler, who collected multiple titles during his three-decade stint across the youth, juniors, collegiate, and professional levels, will work closely with SBP’s Talent Identification and Grassroots Development Program, spearheaded by seasoned coach Norman Black.
The upcoming campaign will be a major test for Sauler, as a successful run in SEABA would earn the squad a berth in the FIBA Under-18 Asia Cup, where a top-four finish is required to qualify for the 2027 FIBA Basketball Under-19 World Cup.
