Barangay Ginebra has been forced to pick its poison throughout its semifinals series against San Miguel.
In Game 3, the Kings chose the deadlier option.
The Kings mounted a gallant effort in limiting June Mar Fajardo to just six points — especially given the nine-time MVP was coming off a trio of 20-20 games in their last outings.
But Ginebra got torched by SMB gunners, with Trollano firing 33 points — including the back-to-back triples that ignited a fiery 21-2 run — allowing the Beermen to seize control and claim a 91-85 victory in Game 3.
Kings head coach Tim Cone sees no consolation in limiting Fajardo if that does not translate to victory.
“Yeah, (limiting Fajardo’ scoring). But we still lost,” said the obviously disappointed Cone.
“It just showed how good of a team they are. We lost to Trollano. He got 33,” he added.
Fajardo was actually held scoreless in the first three quarters but because the defense was all too focused on keeping the 6-foot-10 center in check, Trollano, CJ Perez and Mo Tautuaa picked up the slack and did most of the damage for the Beermen.
“It was a struggle all night. We battled and we fought all night but we just didn't play a good game. We lacked poise. We lacked an idea of what we wanted to do out there. We looked confused at times. Just not a good game,” admitted Cone.
Ginebra did try to mount a comeback when it came within four but it was Trollano who slammed the door on Kings’ chances in the end.
“Our guys battled and continued to fight but that's not good enough against a team like San Miguel. You can't just come in and battle and fight. You got to play great and we didn't play great tonight,” said Cone.
“Again, that's on me. I got to figure it out.”
