Several tons of garbage were collected by the Manila City Department of Public Services (DPS) at the Quirino Grandstand during the Pahalik and some parts of the Traslacion route on Friday, Jan. 9.
As the Andas of the image of Jesus Nazareno and its devotees left P. Burgos Street on the way to Quiapo Church, DPS employees started their cleaning operations as they collected garbage ranging from bottled water, plastic cups, and styrofoam containers left behind by devotees who spent the night at the grandstand grounds.
"Matapos opisyal na magsimula ang Traslacion ngayong Nazareno2026 ay hindi tumigil ang mga kawani ng Department of Public Services sa paglilinis at paghahakot ng basura sa Quirino Grandstand (After the Traslacion officially began this Nazareno2026, staff from the Department of Public Services did not stop cleaning and hauling garbage from the Quirino Grandstand)," Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso said.
"Kasalukuyan pa ring isinasagawa ang Pahalik dito na magtatagal hanggang bukas, Jan. 10. Sa ating mga deboto ay mariin naming ipinapaalala sa bawat isa na pairalin ang disiplina sa sarili; itapon sa tamang sisidlan ang ating mga basura at huwag nating iwan ang Quirino Grandstand na madumi (The Pahalik is still underway and will last until tomorrow, Jan. 10. To our devotees, we strongly remind each one to practice self-discipline; dispose of our garbage in the proper containers and let us not leave the Quirino Grandstand dirty)," he added.
Aside from the Quirino Grandstand, DPS street sweepers also conducted cleanup operations on areas where the Andas had passed, including Finance Road, Ayala Boulevard, and the Ayala Bridge.
Call for cleanliness
Pro-environment group EcoWaste Coalition had earlier called on devotees and other participants of the Traslacion 2026 in Manila to observe cleanliness and the proper disposal of trash during the conduct of the traditional procession that is expected to be attended by millions.
“We request all the devotees to manifest their devotion to Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno in a way that will respect the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment and demonstrate our role as caretakers or stewards of God’s Creation. Littering should never form part of the Traslacion and of our being in communion with Christ, the Redeemer,” EcoWaste Coalition Zero Waste Campaigner Ochie Tolentino said.
The DPS collected 382 tons of garbage during last year's Traslacion and Pahalik.
