New finance chief takes seat on BSP Monetary Board

Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go assumed his seat on the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) policy-making Monetary Board on Thursday, Jan. 8.
Go, who was designated by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as the Cabinet representative to the board, was sworn in by BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. at the central bank’s headquarters in Manila.
The appointment formalizes Go’s role in the nation’s highest monetary authority, where he will help navigate a landscape defined by cooling yet vigilant inflation management and push for aggressive infrastructure investment.
The newest board member fills a vacancy left by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, his predecessor at the Department of Finance. Go now joins a seven-member body that includes Remolona, Benjamin Diokno, Romeo Bernardo, Rosalia De Leon, Jose Querubin, and Walter Wassmer.
The Monetary Board is tasked with maintaining price stability and overseeing the Philippine financial system, which has remained resilient despite global macroeconomic headwinds and fluctuating commodity prices.
Go’s ascent to the central bank’s boardroom follows a high-profile stint as the Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs. In that role, he acted as the administration’s primary liaison for large-scale investments, chairing the Economic Development Group and coordinating policy across the Department of Budget and Management and the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development.
Before entering public service, Go was a key figure in the Philippine corporate landscape. As the former Chief Executive Officer of Robinsons Land Corp., he managed one of the country’s largest real estate conglomerates.
His private-sector portfolio spanned several industries, including aviation, petrochemicals, power, and banking.
Analysts suggest that this deep background in the private sector provides him with a pragmatic lens on how interest rate decisions and reserve requirements impact the real economy and corporate capital expenditure.
A graduate of Management Engineering from Ateneo de Manila University, Go takes his seat at a time when the BSP is weighing the timing of further easing cycles.
