A dispute among tricycle drivers over earnings turned deadly after it escalated into a stabbing and shooting incident that left two men dead in Barangay 96, Tondo, Manila, on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
According to the Manila Police District (MPD), one of the victims was identified only as “Marlon,” a tricycle driver.
The incident occurred at around 7 p.m. at the corner of Velasquez Street and Jacinto Street, when the victim encountered two fellow tricycle drivers, identified as “Edmond” and “Eugene.”
Police said the three had an earlier argument over tricycle earnings, which later resumed in the evening.
The dispute escalated into a confrontation after the victim got off his tricycle.
Investigators said the altercation turned violent.
The victim was struck with a bladed weapon, then shot.
Responding police officers arrived and attempted to intervene while the altercation was still ongoing.
One of the suspects allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers, prompting a policeman to fire his service weapon, hitting one of the suspects.
The other suspect managed to flee the scene with the firearm.
The victim and the wounded suspect were rushed to a hospital.
The victim was declared dead on arrival due to a gunshot wound in the chest and a stab wound in the nape.
The wounded suspect later died from a bullet wound in the abdomen.
The responding police officer involved in the shooting has been placed under the custody of the MPD Homicide Section as part of standard operating procedure.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and conducting a manhunt for the remaining suspect.
