Marcos urges newly promoted AFP generals to safeguard public funds
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. (RTVM)
President Marcos has reminded newly promoted generals and flag officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to act as custodians of public resources as they take on higher responsibilities.
Marcos made the remarks during the oath-taking ceremony for 37 newly promoted AFP generals and flag officers and the lone commissioned graduate of the Foreign Pre-Commissioned Training Institutions at Malacañan on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
In his speech, the President said leadership at the senior level is measured not only by operational experience but by the standards officers set in conduct and decision-making across the military.
“More than your role as the protectors of our nation, you must also be among the faithful stewards who guard public resources,” he said.
“Be among those who ensure that every peso translates into capability, preparedness, and integrity,” he added.
The Chief Executive said the promotions reflect the Republic’s confidence in the officers’ judgment and ability to lead amid pressure and uncertainty, even as their mission remains unchanged.
“Ang halaga ng isang tunay na pinuno ay nasusukat sa tamang asal at magandang halimbawa na kaniyang ipinapakita, hindi sa taas ng kaniyang ranggo (The worth of a true leader is measured by proper conduct and the good example he shows, not by the height of his rank),” he said.
Marcos said higher rank demands sharper judgment and steadier leadership, especially at a time of complex threats, rising geopolitical tensions, and heightened security concerns.
He also cited the government’s continued commitment to the welfare of military and uniformed personnel following the signing of the P6.793-trillion national budget for 2026 this week.
The President pointed to the updated base pay schedule and increased subsistence allowance for military and uniformed personnel as part of efforts to support the country’s protectors.
Meanwhile, Marcos said the AFP remained focused on readiness in 2025, advancing modernization efforts that support both defense and humanitarian missions.
He noted that the military continued to protect communities, assist during calamities, and sustain peace-building efforts at home while representing the Philippines in joint exercises and defense partnerships abroad.
Marcos also acknowledged the families of the newly promoted officers, describing them as a vital source of strength behind every soldier.
“Kayo ang tahimik na haligi at matibay na sandigan ng bawat kawal ng ating Sandatahang Lakas (You are the quiet pillars and strong support of every soldier of our Armed Forces),” he said.
“Kaisa ninyo ako sa panalangin sa kanilang kaligtasan at kapakanan (I join you in praying for their safety and welfare),” he added.
