State-run firm Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) is repurposing a planned sports complex in Taguig City into new school and community facilities as part of its broader effort to promote human capital development.
The BCDA said it signed a memorandum of agreement with the local government of Taguig last month for the use of the latter’s 1,110-square-meter parcel of land in Pamayanang Diego Silang.
The deal covers the development, construction, and operation of facilities that will support public education and community use.
Currently under the supervision of the Senator Renato “Compañero” Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School, the land was originally planned as a site for a future sports complex.
Under the agreement, it will now be repurposed for the development of school and community facilities that will directly benefit students and nearby residents.
This is expected to include a modern library, remote learning facilities, and a computer laboratory, alongside spaces for recreation and community use.
BCDA President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Joshua Bingcang said investing in education and inclusive urban development reflects the agency’s role in supporting human capital alongside infrastructure development.
Bingcang said the BCDA has been expanding its portfolio of education-supportive developments to ensure long-term social returns for land use, such as through the National Academy of Sports (NAS) in New Clark City.
The state-run firm most recently started the construction of a ₱360-million dormitory for student-athletes at the NAS in June of last year, which is set for completion this year.
NAS is home to around 270 student-athletes enrolled in various academic and athletic disciplines, but this will increase to nearly 700 with the new dormitory.
“This partnership allows us to extend that commitment to Taguig by helping create accessible and inclusive learning spaces for the community,” Bingcang said.
Taguig City Mayor Laarni Cayetano said the agreement with the BCDA strengthens the city’s education agenda, while at the same time ensuring that public land is used to deliver tangible social benefits.
“This partnership advances our shared goal of making education a cornerstone of community development and ensuring that public spaces serve the people who need them most,” she said.
