6.4-magnitude earthquake hits Davao Oriental, no tsunami threat – Phivolcs

A strong tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental, at 11:02 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 55 kilometers north-northeast of Manay, with a depth of 23 kilometers.
Phivolcs also issued an advisory confirming that there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following the strong quake.
Despite the lack of tsunami risk, authorities warned of possible aftershocks and local damage due to the earthquake’s intensity.
Reported intensities include Intensity V in Manay (Davao Oriental), Hinatuan (Surigao del Sur), and Talacogon (Agusan del Sur).
Intensity IV was felt in Bislig City and Cagwait (Surigao del Sur), as well as Tarragona and Cateel (Davao Oriental).
Intensity III was reported in Tandag City (Surigao del Sur), Boston and Baganga (Davao Oriental), and Claver (Surigao del Norte).
Intensity II occurred in Davao City, General Santos City, Butuan City, Baybay and Palo (Leyte), and Hinundayan, San Juan, and San Francisco (Southern Leyte).
Instrumental intensities showed Intensity IV in Malungon (Sarangani) and Intensity III in Kiamba (Sarangani), Digos City (Davao del Sur), and Davao City.
Phivolcs earlier reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.7.
