DOH-NIR logs 155 firecracker injuries, 600 road crashes during holidays

BACOLOD CITY – The Department of Health-Negros Island Region (DOH-NIR) recorded a total of 155 firecracker injuries and 600 road crashes during the holiday season from Dec. 21 to Jan. 6.
Negros Occidental had the most cases with 118, Negros Oriental with 30, Bacolod City with six, and Siquijor with one. One-hundred twelve were blast or burn injury without amputation, 27 eye injuries, four blast or burn injury with amputation, and 11 eye injury and blast or burn injury without amputation.
Negros Occidental had 334 road accidents, followed by 173 in Negros Oriental, 81 in Siquijor, and 12 in Bacolod City, with seven deaths, mostly motorcycle crashes. Four fatalities were from Negros Occidental, two in Negros Oriental, and one in Siquijor. No deaths were reported in this highly-urbanized city.
The DOH conducted a Ligtas Christmas campaign monitoring visit to Bago City Hospital, Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital, and Cadiz District Hospital in Negros Occidental on Jan. 2.

The visits are part of the agency’s active response under the Ligtas Christmas campaign, with surveillance and facility readiness measures in place until Jan. 6.
