Bad weather leaves P13-M damaged boats, houses in Iloilo coastal town

ILOILO CITY – Inclement weather due to the northeast monsoon left some P13.5-million worth of damage in the coastal municipality of Concepcion in Iloilo, based on the final rapid damage assessment and needs analysis conducted by the local disaster risk reduction and management (LDRRM) office.
LDRRM office head John Bryan Gabayeron, in a media interview on Tuesday, said the high tide with a maximum height of 1.9 meters, a localized thunderstorm, and a squall were recorded between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Jan. 3, damaging 216 fishing boats.
Of the total, 44 were destroyed and 172 were partially damaged from one mainland and 11 island barangays of the municipality.
“We also have households along the shoreline and island barangays that were affected. Thirty houses were totally damaged, and 28 were partially damaged. The affected houses were from Barangays Dungon, Polopina, Lo-ong, and Botlog,” he said.
Losses due to damaged boats were placed at P10.62 million; P1.9 million for affected houses, and P950,000 for shoreline protection, port, and seawall.
Gabayeron said they are now fast-tracking the provision of relief operations to provide food packs to affected families.
The municipal council on Monday crafted a request addressed to fifth district Rep. Binky Tupas for financial assistance to fisherfolk.
“We will also ask for assistance from the province (provincial government),” Gabayeron said.
In a previous interview, Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. said the provincial government will look into the possible assistance it can provide through the provincial disaster risk reduction and management office. (PNA)
