Teen dies after falling into Pasig River while fleeing pursuers
An 18-year-old man, who was allegedly fleeing from several men aboard a red vehicle, died after falling into the Pasig River in Barangay 286, Binondo, Manila, authorities said.
Barangay Kagawad Hamid Salambat said the incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m., on Monday night, Jan. 5, following a disturbance behind the barangay outpost.
The barangay sought assistance from the Philippine Coast Guard, which recovered the victim’s body at around 8:47 p.m.
Authorities said that there were witnesses who said the teenager was allegedly fleeing from several men aboard a red vehicle when he fell into the river.
Rovero added that the victim was with companions who also fell into the river but managed to survive and get out safely.
Barangay records showed that the victim was not a resident of Barangay 286 but had previously been turned over to barangay authorities on Nov. 11, after being arrested by police near Manila City Hall.
The Manila Police District has begun reviewing CCTV footage to determine the victim’s movements and verify reports regarding the red vehicle allegedly chasing him.
The victim’s remains were brought to a funeral parlor for examination, while authorities continue efforts to locate his surviving companions to obtain additional statements.
