MNLF appeals resolution banning MILF activities in Sulu

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) has requested the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Sulu to revoke a resolution banning all MILF activities in the province.

Resolution 83-2025 passed on Dec. 26 and signed by Vice Gov. Abdusakur Tan and eight other provincial board members disallowed all MILF-led activities in the province, stating that such constitute “jurisdictional overreach and a threat to public order and safety.”

The resolution stemmed from a Supreme Court decision in September 2024 removing the province of Sulu from the political territory of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The MILF strongly opposed the resolution, describing it as a “dangerous distortion” of national laws and international peace treaties.

MNLF officials, in a statement released on Jan. 3, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the MNLF and MILF in fostering peace and development in the region.

"We are hoping that the provincial board in Sulu will listen to us. All we want is peace, lasting peace, co-existence, and solidarity of all Moro communities in Mindanao," said Muslimin Sema, BARMM Labor and Employment Minister.

MNLF and MILF officials sit as representatives in the BARMM 80-seat parliament and lead departments in providing much needed social services to BARMM residents, including Sulu, notwithstanding its removal from BARMM.

MNLF leaders urged cooperation among Moro leaders across BARMM and other regions in Mindanao to safeguard the benefits of the peace agreements achieved in the pursuit of self-governance for Moro communities within the framework of Philippine sovereignty.

Tan said Sulu must distance itself from groups affiliated with the BARMM and prioritize its independence in governance following the Supreme Court ruling.
