Korean actor Ahn Sung-ki dead at 74

Veteran Korean actor Ahn Sung-ki, a respected figure in the film industry, died on Jan. 5. He was 74. 

He was rushed to a hospital on Dec. 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home. He was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2019. 

Ahn Sung-ki passed away just four days after turning 74 on Jan. 1.

Artist Company, his agency, announced his passing. 

Here’s is the agency’s statement: 

“Actor Ahn Sung-ki passed away at the age of 74 on January 5, 2026, at 9:00 AM. Ahn Sung-ki was a figure who, with a deep sense of duty and unwavering sincerity in acting, has been a part of the history of Korean popular culture.

“His acting always addressed people and life, and through numerous works, he delivered profound resonance and comfort across eras and generations.

“In particular, Ahn Sung-ki was a true ‘national actor’ who valued dignity and responsibility as a human being above all else, respecting both his senior and junior artists and the field.

“Artist Company is deeply saddened by this sudden news. We pray for the repose of his soul and offer our sincere condolences to the bereaved family.”

It said the funeral will be hosted by the Shin Young-kyun Arts and Culture Foundation and the Korean Film Actors Association, and will be held as a film industry funeral ceremony. 

Honorary Funeral Committee Chairman Shin Young-kyun, Director Bae Chang-ho, Korean Film Actors Association Chairman Lee Gap-seong, Shin Eon-sik, Acting Director of the Shin Young-kyun Arts and Culture Foundation, and Korean Film Actors Association Chairman Yang Yoon-ho will serve as co-chairs.

It said actors Lee Jung-jae and Jung Woo-sung, as well as other film personalities, will accompany the deceased on his final journey. 

The agency said the funeral will be held in Room 31 of the Seoul St. Mary's Hospital Funeral Hall. The funeral will be held at 6:00 AM on Friday, January 9th, and the burial site will be Byeolgeurida in Yangpyeong.

“Out of respect for the deceased's wishes and the hearts of his bereaved family, we earnestly request that you refrain from excessive reporting and speculative reporting on unconfirmed matters. The works and spirit of actor Ahn Sung-ki will remain with us for a long time to come and be remembered by many. We pray for the repose of his soul,” the agency said.

Born in 1952, Ahn Sung-ki starred in many films, including "Unbowed," "Hansan: Rising Dragon," "Cassiopeia," "The Divine Fury," "The Hunt" and "Revivre."

He was a recipient of the Korean government's Bogwan Order of Cultural Merit and Eungwan Order of Cultural Merit.
