Chavit challenges Marcos, his 'former friend', to a debate

Former politician and Ilocano kingpin Chavit Singson said he is going to Malacañan and challenge President Marcos, his "former friend," to a debate in relation to the anomalous flood control projects.
Chavit, speaking at a supposed "emergency" press conference his camp arranged on Monday, Jan. 5, said he wants it done "as soon as possible."
"ASAP. Sinasabi ko na ngayon. Kung bukas ang sinabi nila, pupunta ako sa (That's what I'm saying now. If they tell me, they want a debate tomorrow, I will go to) Malacañang if they accept my challenge," he said.
"Kung anong rason nila na bakit nandyan pa sila [sa Malacañan], yun, mag-dedebate pa kami doon (We will debate why they are still in Malacañan)," he added.
Singson also wanted a "One Time, Big Time" rally at the "soonest possible time," and called on all members of the society, including the religious sector, uniformed personnel, and members of "the left and the right," to join the gathering.
Singson called for a press conference in what his camp said was a bid to "release never-before-seen evidence and personal testimonies concerning" the presidential legacies of Marcos Jr. and Sr.
During an hour of talking, Singson showed a list of supposed anomalous infrastructure projects in Ilocos Norte—the turf of the President and his son, congressman Sandro Marcos.
They were anomalous because the projects, according to the document he showed on screen, were declared completed although they are actually not.
Singson played various video clips apparently obtained online, showing the impact of the ghost flood control projects to Filipinos.
Singson also hit Marcos for claiming to be the first to expose the anomalies in the 2025 national budget, although it was supposedly former president Rodrigo Duterte who initially pointed it out.
The Marcos administration, he added, silenced Duterte because of that by “kidnapping” him and bringing him to the International Criminal Court (ICC). The former president was arrested by Interpol in March 2025 over crimes against humanity in relation to his war against drugs
Monday’s press conference was the second time that Singson called for a media briefing in Manila to speak out against the Marcos’ administration.
In September 2025, he also held a press conference, where he spoke out against the flood control controversy and called on the youth to revolt against the government.
Singson said it was only this time that he decided to show supposed evidence of Marcos’ and his cousin, former House Speaker Martin Romualdez’ hands in the corruption due to “divine providence.”
He said Marcos Jr. is 68 years old in 2026, like his father, who was also 68 years old in 1986, or 40 years ago.
He said number 40 holds significance in the Bible because it "means a completion and a start of a new beginning."
"Forty years apart. Ika-40th ngayon. So, hinintay ko 'tong buwan na 'to para maging 40. Because 40 ay malaking bagay para sa Bible (It's 40th year this year. So I waited for this month to make it 40 years apart, because 40 holds significance in the Bible)," Singson said.
Singson then told Marcos to just surrender himself to the police for his supposed connection in the controversy and not wait to happen to him what happened to Libya's Muammar Gaddafi, who was overthrown by rebel forces.
"Ang advice ko sa my former friend, eh dapat sumuko na siya. Mas maganda kung sumuko sa police o sa military. Wag nyang antayin yung nangyari sa Libya... anong nangyari sa kanya, taumbayan humuli, pinatay (My advice to my former friend is to surrender. It's better for him to surrender to the police or the military, rather than wait to happen to him what happened in Libya, where its leader was caught by the people and killed)," he said.
"So, Bongbong Marcos, my former friend, kausapin ka ng military o ng police (You talk to the military or police). Better surrender. Wala kang ligtas dito. Hindi ka makakaligtas. Ang laki ng ginawa nyong kalokohan (You cannot escape. You did a big controversy)," he added.
