The Manila Police District (MPD) reported that five persons of interest linked to the firecracker left on the street, later picked up by two 12-year-old boys in Tondo, Manila, have yet to appear and give their statements, despite being summoned by authorities.
The incident resulted in the death of one child and serious injuries to another.
CCTV footage from Barangay 226 shows the five men walking along Almeda Street in the early hours of December 28.
One of them was carrying a green eco bag.
According to barangay officials, the group included some residents and at least one man, reportedly from Bulacan, who was seen holding the firecrackers.
Several attempts by the group to light the firecrackers reportedly failed, and the items were eventually left on the street.
Over 18 hours later, the two minors picked up the firecrackers and carried them to A. Lorenzo Street, where one exploded, killing 12-year-old Cesar Russell Sarmiento and seriously injuring his friend.
Authorities stated that those who left the firecrackers could face charges if negligence or law violations are proven.
The victim has already been cremated, while his friend remains hospitalized. Local officials and police assured the public that monitoring in the area will be intensified to prevent similar incidents.
