Acute stroke tops deaths as DOH logs 9% rise in NCD cases during holidays

The Department of Health (DOH) reported a nine percent increase in non-communicable disease (NCD) cases during the recent holiday surveillance period, with acute stroke emerging as the leading cause of deaths.
The DOH said the figures were based on surveillance data collected from Dec. 21 to Jan. 2, covering cases monitored nationwide during the holiday period.
“Nasa 349 ang kabuuang kaso ng Non-Communicable Diseases ang naitala ng Department of Health simula December 21, 2025 hanggang January 2, 2026 (A total of 349 non-communicable disease cases were recorded by the Department of Health from December 21, 2025 to January 2, 2026),” the agency stated.
Of the total cases, the DOH said acute stroke accounted for the majority of deaths, followed by acute coronary events and bronchial asthma.
“205 dito ang nagkaroon ng Acute Stroke na pangunahing dahilan ng pagkamatay, habang 95 ang nagkaroon ng Acute Coronary Syndrome, samantalang 49 na kaso naman sa Bronchial Asthma (Of these, 205 involved acute stroke as the primary cause of death, while 95 had acute coronary syndrome, and 49 cases involved bronchial asthma),” the health department said.
The DOH noted that the latest tally is higher by nine percent compared with the same surveillance window a year earlier.
“Mas mataas ito ng 9% kumpara sa kaparehong panahon ng surveillance noong 2024 patawid ng 2025, na may 319 cases (This is 9% higher compared with the same surveillance period from 2024 to 2025, which recorded 319 cases).”
According to the DOH, cardiovascular emergencies were most prevalent among older adults, while asthma cases were concentrated among children during the surveillance period.
“Karamihan sa kaso ng Acute Coronary Syndrome ay nasa edad 50 pataas (Most acute coronary syndrome cases were among those aged 50 and above),” it said.
“Nasa edad 40 hanggang 79 na taong gulang naman ang pinaka-naapektuhan ng Acute Stroke (Those aged 40 to 79 years old were the most affected by acute stroke),” the agency added.
Meanwhile, the DOH said children aged 0 to nine years old were the most affected by asthma.
