Former president Rodrigo Duterte welcomed the New Year quietly, spending the holiday sleeping, eating, and watching television, his daughter Veronica “Kitty” Duterte said.
In an interview with vlogger Alvin & Tourism in the Netherlands, Kitty said her father marked the New Year in his usual routine, describing him as a man of habit.
“Walang bago sa kanya (Nothing new with him),” she said in the video uploaded to Facebook late Friday, Jan. 2.
“Sinabi niya, ‘Wala. Tulog, kain, TV.’ Yun yung kasiyahan niya (He said, ‘Nothing. Sleep, eat, TV.’ That’s what makes him happy),” he added.
Greetings sent to Filipinos
Kitty also relayed her father’s New Year’s message to Filipinos, particularly those who gathered outside the International Criminal Court (ICC) detention center in The Hague, where the former president has been incarcerated since March 2025.
“Tatay Digong sent his greetings to everyone now, every Filipino here today—Merry Christmas and Happy New Year daw,” she said.
She said the former president initially thought no one would show up because of the holidays, but was pleased to learn that Filipinos still came.
“Masaya siya na marinig na may mga tao pa rin (He was happy to hear that there were still people),” Kitty said.
“Happy siya (He was happy) to have you all, and he said more power to you all daw,” she added.
‘Still happy, still blessed’
Kitty said she herself spent a happy New Year in Europe, though she admitted the celebration felt incomplete without her father.
“Still incomplete because of my father’s absence. But still happy and I’m still feeling blessed,” she added.
Looking ahead to 2026, Kitty said she has already achieved her goals for the previous year and is now focused on personal growth.
“For 2026, I just pray to be a better version of myself and stronger, fiercer for my family,” she said.
Message to the youth
Kitty also shared a message for Filipinos welcoming the New Year, particularly the younger generation.
“With everything going on in social media… I think it would help if we stop comparing ourselves and only compete with ourselves,” she said.
“What I aim to be every day is a better version of myself, not someone else. I think everyone should try to apply that mindset,” she added.
