Woman, son killed in New Year's Day crash

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A woman and her son were killed in a road crash in Barangay La Paz here on New Year's Day.
Investigation showed that 33-year-old driver Jaak Hassan Alih was driving a pickup vehicle with more than 10 people on board and navigating a descending portion of a hill when a brake malfunction led to a loss of control of the vehicle. The vehicle veered off the road, struck a tree, and turned turtle.
Two passengers were killed due to serious injuries – Jaak's sister Satra, 32, and her 13-year-old son, Bagli Hasan Alih. The injured were taken to a hospital.
The group reportedly came from a picnic in the area and were on their way home when the accident occurred. The place where the crash occurred is an accident-prone area.
