A total of 10 people, including a 14-year-old, were injured in Muntinlupa as people welcomed the New Year.
Despite pleas from Muntinlupa City government and police, thousands of residents defied the firecracker ban in the city, setting off firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices on New Year’s Eve.
The Muntinlupa City Health Office recorded 10 firecracker-related injuries as of 10 a.m. on Jan. 1.
The victims’ ages ranged from 14 to 64 years and seven of them were males.
Six of the victims were injured by Kwitis, one with Piccolo, one with Dart Bomb and two with unknown firecrackers.
The victims were residents of Barangays Poblacion, Cupang, Alabang, Bayanan and Putatan in Muntinlupa; Calamba, Laguna; and Las Pinas.
The victim of the Dart Bomb is confined in a hospital and will undergo an operation for the amputation of a finger in his left hand.
One was transferred to another hospital while the rest were discharged from the hospital.
On Dec. 30 and 31, the Muntinlupa police confiscated 1,086 pieces of firecrackers worth P18,340.
Among the seized firecrackers were Five Star, Piccolo, Judas Belt, Pla-Pla, Giant Whistle Bomb, Giant Bawang, Kwitis, fountain, lucis and sparklers.
They also confiscated 14 open pipes in vehicles.
Muntinlupa has a total ban for the possession, use, sale and distribution of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices based on an ordinance approved in 2014.
The use of open pipe mufflers is also prohibited in another ordinance.
During the holiday season, Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon repeatedly urged residents to follow the local laws and not use firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices to prevent injuries.
