Cop gunned down on New Year's Eve

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A policeman who was on his way home was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Diplahan municipality, Zamboanga Sibugay province at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31.

The Diplahan Municipal Police Station identified the victim as Police Staff Sgt. Juneray Estallo Gamones, a resident of Malangas and assigned to the Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Police Office in Pagadian City.

Investigation showed that Gamones was driving his motorcycle after working in Pagadian City when the riding-in-tandem suspects appeared and shot him. Gamones died on the spot.

Police recovered four spent shells from a 5.56mm firearm at the crime scene. Gamones’ service firearm was missing.

Police are conducting follow-up investigation and pursuit operations.
