BuCor chief to PDLs: 'You have the power to turn your lives around'
Spending the new year behind bars is not the best way to start 2026, Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said on Thursday, Jan. 1.
However, Catapang told persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) who are detained in BuCor’s prison facilities that they still have the chance to turn their lives around.
"To our persons deprived of liberty, it is always one day at a time. The past does not define the future you want to have; it is the choices you make today that determine the kind of life you will live tomorrow," he told the PDLs.
He also told them to embrace the opportunities for learning, rehabilitation and personal reflection provided to them. “You have the power to transform your story," he said.
Catapang then thanked BuCor personnel for the dedication they have shown in work despite the many challenges they have faced.
"Each day you don the uniform, you embody the values of discipline, compassion, and integrity. Your role transcends beyond the walls of correctional facilities -- you are mentors, guides, and, at times, a beacon of hope for those we serve," he said.
Thus, he urged the personnel to continue to strive for excellence and embrace every opportunity to uplift and reform lives.
“Let us remain committed to our mission of realizing lives and empowering individuals. Together, we can foster an environment where change is not just a word but a tangible reality," Catapang said.
He urged the PDLs and the BuCor personnel to reflect on their personal journeys and the milestones they have achieved.
"Let us ignite a spirit of renewal within ourselves and in our community. Together, we can create a legacy of hope, transformation, and resilience," he also said.
