Sexagenarian held for murder of teenage girl in Cagayan de Oro City

BUTUAN CITY – Police arrested a 62-year-old man for allegedly killing a 17-year-old girl in Barangay Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City on Wednesday, April 30.

The suspect was arrested 36 hours after a massive manhunt operation against the suspect was conducted.

“The regional command of Police Regional Office-10 under the leadership of Police Brig. Gen. Jaysen C. de Guzman commended the swift and effective response of our pursuing police force,” said PRO 10-Regional Public Information Office (RPIO) chief Police Major Joann G. Navarro on Thursday, May 1.

She said the suspect, “Boy,” a worker of a shipping container line and resident of Lanao del Norte, was nabbed in Barangay Poblacion, Initao town, Misamis Oriental province at 6:55 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30.

“The suspect had been evading arrest by moving between various locations, but because of the round-the-clock relentless and coordinated efforts of our pursuing team led to his arrest,” Navarro said.

The victim’s body was found at around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, in a swampy area in Sitio Mambato with a hack wound in the neck. The victim was a resident of Barangay Pikinit, Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Lanao del Norte.

Navarro, quoting an initial report from the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO), said that witnesses reported seeing the suspect flee the scene with a bloodied bolo.

One witness also revealed that the suspect had earlier introduced the victim as his “mistress.”

The Regional Forensic Unit-10 processed the crime scene.

The suspect is under the custody of COCPO Station 3 for proper disposition.

“Thorough investigation is still ongoing to determine the motive of the grisly killing,” Navarro said.

De Guzman praised the inter-agency coordination and swift response of lawmen.

“This operation reflects the relentless commitment of our personnel to pursue justice and hold criminals accountable,” he said. “I commend all the operating units involved in this successful manhunt operation.”
