DRIVING THOUGHTS

It’s summer and many will be planning trips out of the city, or the country.
Just a reminder: you don’t need a passport to find paradise—it’s right here at home. With more than 7,000 islands rich in culture, history, and natural wonders, the Philippines offers world-class destinations that deserve to be explored not just by international travelers, but by Filipinos themselves.
In fact, traveling within our own country is one of the most meaningful ways we can contribute to national development.
Domestic tourism has emerged as a powerful force, especially after the pandemic.
Trips to any local destination are more than personal getaways—they are lifelines for local economies. When you visit a local destination, you support small businesses: from homestay owners and tour guides to local food vendors, tricycle drivers, and artisans. Your presence translates into income, jobs, and opportunities for growth.
Tourism is one of the country’s major economic drivers. Before the pandemic, the sector contributed 12.7 percent to the national GDP. Today, it continues to fuel recovery, with domestic travelers playing a crucial role.
In many provinces, domestic tourism has been the catalyst for community development. As more travelers arrive, there is greater incentive to improve infrastructure—roads, transportation, and digital access. Schools, health centers, and livelihood programs often follow.
You get the picture –visiting our own country is not just a leisure activity; it is a form of economic participation that uplifts entire communities.
Moreover, domestic travel fosters a deeper connection to our culture and identity. It allows us to appreciate the traditions, languages, and histories that shape each region—from the rice terraces of Ifugao to the beaches of Siargao, from the festivals of Iloilo to the tranquil lakes of Mindanao. It reminds us that the Philippines is not just a place to live—it is a place to love.
This is why we urge every Filipino to make a commitment: set aside time and budget for at least one local trip each year. Traveling within the country does not have to be expensive. With budget airlines, online booking apps, and DOT-backed promos, there are more affordable options than ever. Whether you’re taking a quick weekend getaway or a week-long cultural immersion, your trip can make a meaningful impact.
Support campaigns like “Love the Philippines” not just as slogans, but as a lifestyle. Choose to spend your travel budget where it matters—here, at home.
So, the next time you think of traveling, think of the Philippines. Explore it. Celebrate it. Help it flourish.
The easiest way to start is by taking a road trip. The road system around the country is well-defined, you can’t get lost. With navigation apps and the friendly locals always ready to give directions, you are assured of getting to where you planned to go.
Explore North Luzon from Metro Manila to Pagudpud, or to Banawe and Sagada. Dare to drive on and exit at the other sided of Luzon Island.
Or drive to the Bicol Region, exploring Southern Luzon up to Sorsogon. If you have the luxury of time, drive to the Port of Matnog and take a roll-on-roll-off ferry to Allen, Samar. From there you can follow the long road to Tacloban, Leyte, crossing the famous San Juanico Bridge.
If you still have time, drive on to Ormoc and take a ferry to Cebu City. Explore the city, then drive on to the other side of the island and catch a RORO ferry to Negros Island. Drive on. See the Philippines!
I’ve done that in many installments and in one loop. And if I have time, I’d like to do that again. We have a beautiful country!
I’ve talked to many people who are amazed at the stories I tell them about the small towns I’ve visited in our country. While they tell me stories about Paris, Madrid, New York, San Francisco.
This summer, plan at least one trip to any place in our country.
Travel local, support local. Every trip you take within the Philippines fuels not only your own growth, but the growth of others. You help sustain livelihoods, preserve heritage, and build pride in our nation.
