Trabaho Party-list has welcomed the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) confirmation that minimum wage earners in Metro Manila will soon receive their long-awaited pay hike.
In a statement on Thursday, May 1, Labor Day, party-list spokesman lawyer Mitchell-David Espiritu said the move was a necessary step to ease the burden on the country’s most vulnerable workers.
“This is a positive development for our minimum wage earners, who are among the hardest hit by inflation and high living expenses. We at Trabaho Party-list have consistently advocated for fair wages, and this hike is a step in the right direction,” said Espiritu.
DOLE Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma announced that the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board will soon conduct a wage review that will adjust the daily minimum wage rate for workers in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The pro-worker party-list emphasized that the minimum wage must keep pace with economic realities. It pointed out that many workers earning minimum pay still fall short of covering daily household expenses, particularly in urban areas like Metro Manila.
“This wage hike should not be seen as a burden to employers, but as a necessary correction to help hardworking Filipinos survive and thrive,” Espiritu added.
Lawyer Johanne Bautista, Ninai Chavez, and kagawad Nelson de Vega are the party-list's first, second, and third nominees, respectively. They are vying for seats in the House of Representatives, which is the bigger of the two legislative chambers in the country.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to pushing for regular, evidence-based wage reviews, as well as long-term reforms aimed at achieving a genuine living wage for all Filipino workers.
