LTFRB prepares suspension order vs company of the bus in SCTEX fatal accident

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is now preparing the suspension order against the company that owns the passenger bus tagged in a fatal accident in one of the toll plazas of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) on Thursday, May 1.

The LTFRB move came after Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon ordered the suspension of operation of the bus company after the SCTEX accident that left 10 people dead and 37 others injured.

“The LTFRB will also conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and require the company to undergo mandatory safety checks and a roadworthiness audit,” the statement read.

“We will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to uphold commuter safety and accountability,” it added.

The accident occurred around noon on Thursday at the SCTEX Exit Toll Plaza in Barangay Bantog in Tarlac City.

Based on the police report, three vehicles—Toyota Veloz, Kia Sonet and Nissan Urvan— and a tractor head were in queue at the cash lane of the toll plaza when the speeding bus hit the Nissan Urvan from behind.

The strong impact caused the urban to hit the Kia Sonet and the two vehicles were pinned between the tractor head and the passenger bus. The tractor head also hit the Toyota Veloz in front of it.

Based on the report from the Police Regional Office 3, eight people inside the van and two people inside the KIA Sonet were crushed to death. There were two survivors, one each from the two vehicles.

On the other hand, the driver, the conductor and 33 passengers of the bus were injured.

All the injured victims were taken to the Tarlac Provincial Hospital.
