ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) has raised a red tide alert in Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay provinces.

Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council-9 Memorandum No. 032, Series of 2025, reiterated the warning contained in BFAR-9 bulletin dated April 3, 2025 saying that paralytic shellfish poison, otherwise known as toxic red tide, was detected in Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur and Tantanang Bay in Zamboanga Sibugay.
“All types of shellfish and Aceles sp. or ‘alamang’ gathered from the areas are not safe for human consumption,” it said.
It also said that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe for consumption provided they are fresh and washed thoroughly and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.
The council enjoined all member-agencies and disaster risk reduction management offices to implement precautionary measures to prevent people from consuming shellfish in these two areas.
