Sen. Grace Poe lauded the Department of Transportation (DOTr) chief Vince Dizon for allowing unconsolidated jeepneys to ply the same routes again, saying this is a “step in the right direction.”
“The announcement of the DOTr chief that unconsolidated jeepneys will be allowed on the roads anew is a step in the right direction,” Poe said in a statement.
“Untangling the messy (transport) modernization program will have to begin with the recognition of our drivers' right to earn a decent living and to be involved in meaningful opportunities for growth,” she said.
Nevertheless, Poe expressed hope the DOTr and other concerned transport agencies will make it easy for jeepney drivers and operators to secure their franchises anew.
“Simultaneously, the route plans should be ready to ensure that all roads will have available transportation for our commuters,” she stressed.
“We all want a transport system that is dignified, safe and at par with global standards. Those on the driver's seat must steer the modernization program in the right direction,” she added.
It was the transportation group, Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston), that alleged DOTr chief Secretary Vince Dizon who assured them DOTr is already seeking ways to allow the unconsolidated drivers and operators to return to their routes.
