BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is rehabilitating the decades-old Magsaysay Bridge here.
“We are now redoubling our effort in rehabilitation works and all technical men and working force are already on the ground in fast-tracking the project,” DPWH-13 (Caraga) Regional Director Engr. Alex B. Ramos said.

The Magsaysay Bridge built during the administration of President Ramon Magsaysay in the 1950s has a span of 126 meters and a width of 7.32 meters and crosses the mighty Agusan River.
In a progress report to Public Works and Highway Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, Ramos said some of the ongoing major rehabilitation works are the foundation modification of the bridge, retrofitting using seismic devices, external post-tensioning, sidewalk modification, and driving of bored piles.
The project with a P550-million allocation started in 2023 and expected to be completed by the end of the year 2026 or early part of 2027.
“We are hoping that no weather disturbances and some constraints be encountered along the way,” Ramos said.
Meanwhile, the DPWH is also accelerating the completion of major road projects in the region as part of the agency’s Build, Better, More initiative.
Among these projects is the rehabilitation and widening of the Maharlika Highway with a total length of 264.4 kilometers from Barangay Lipata in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, to Trento, Agusan del Sur.
