'Araw ng Kagitingan': Senate, House leaders honor 'quiet, unbreakable' courage of Filipino war heroes
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero on Wednesday, April 9, urged Filipinos to look back and honor the Filipinos who sacrificed their lives to fight for the freedom and honor of the country.
In commemorating the Day of Valor, Escudero said it is essential to remember the lessons of history—that freedom is not easily achieved and is paid for with sweat, blood, and life.
“Hinihikayat tayo ng araw na ito na patuloy na magsikap para sa bansa at ipakita ang ating tapang at malasakit sa mga hamon ng makabagong panahon (This day encourages us to continue to strive for the country and show our courage and concern for the challenges of modern times),” Escudero said in his Day of Valor message.
“Ngayon, ipakita natin ang pasasalamat sa mga naging bayani ng nakaraan sa pamamagitan ng pagiging bayani sa kasalukuyan. Mula sa paggawa ng mga maliliit na kabutihan hanggang sa mga dakilang layunin para sa bayan, magkaisa tayong lahat upang patuloy na maipagmalaki ang ating pagiging Pilipino (Today, let us show our gratitude to the heroes of the past by becoming heroes of the present. From doing small acts of kindness to great causes for the nation, let us all unite to continue to be proud of our Filipino identity,” he said.
“Panatilihin nating buhay sa ating puso’t isipan ang diwa ng kagitingan (Let us keep the spirit of bravery alive in our hearts and minds),” added the Senate chief.
House Speaker Martin Romualdez also urged Filipinos to reflect not only on the battle of Bataan but also on the silent sacrifices and human cost that came with it.
“Eighty-three (83) years ago in Bataan, thousands of Filipinos stood their ground. They were tired. They were hungry. They were outnumbered. But they kept on fighting—not because they knew they’d win, but because they couldn’t give up their dignity as Filipinos,” the House Speaker said.
Romualdez said the 306-strong House of Representatives described the annual Day of Valor as a solemn occasion that goes beyond history books and ceremonies.
“Today, we remember more than just a battle. We remember the young lives lost too soon. The families who waited for loved ones who never came home. The quiet acts of courage that never made the headlines. Their bravery wasn’t loud—but it was firm, unshakable, and true,” the Speaker stressed.
Romualdez emphasized that the “Araw ng Kagitingan” a time to reflect on what courage really means.”
“It’s not always about medals or ceremonies. Most of the time, it looks like ordinary people doing extraordinary things,” he said.
Addressing Filipino veterans and their families, the House Speaker, expressed his deepest gratitude.
“To our veterans and their families, thank you. What you gave up can never be repaid—but we honor you by building a country you can be proud of,” he stressed.
