Renewable energy (RE) firm Alternergy Holdings Corp. reported that its Alabat wind power project is making progress following the arrival of its two units in Quezon province.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 8, Alternergy reported that the first two wind turbines, with a capacity of eight megawatts (MW) each, have arrived via ocean barge at the jetty on Alabat island.

According to Alternergy, the turbines, built by its partner Envision Energy, would be the largest wind turbines to be installed in the country. Each blade is 90 meters long and approximately the length of a football field, with a wingspan totaling 182 meters wide.

“The towers, once built, will have a maximum height of 195 meters, as tall as the RCBC Plaza or the Ayala Triangle Garden North buildings located in Makati City, with up to 50 floors,” Alternergy said.

Gerry Magbanua, president of Alternergy and its subsidiary Alabat Wind Power Corp (AWPC), believed the units’ arrival marked a milestone for the project.

“The eight-MW wind turbine will efficiently harness the province’s rich wind resources, supporting Quezon province’s accelerated energy transition goals while minimizing environmental impact,” he said.

The project, targeted for completion by the end of 2025, aims to achieve a couple of firsts, as it is slated to be the first wind project along the Pacific Ocean coastline and the first in Quezon.

Alabat wind project was part of the second Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP) of the Department of Energy (DOE) in 2023.

Once operational, the project would help Alternergy reach its 500-MW capacity target by 2026.

Aside from onshore wind projects, it also manages run-of-river hydropower, solar farm and commercial rooftop, battery storage, and offshore wind.

Previously, Alternergy secured a ₱800-million loan from Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) to fund its solar unit Solana Solar Alpha Inc.
