'Superfine': Guide to the Met Gala 2025

From this year's dress code to its honorary chairs, here's what you need to know about fashion's biggest night

Every first Monday in May, the biggest names in fashion, entertainment, and beyond gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to celebrate the way we wear. Since 1948, the Met Gala has served as a fundraising event for the museum’s Costume Institute. But it was in the 1970s that it became a full-blown style spectacle, known for its star-studded guest list and thematic approach to fashion.
This year’s edition promises not only a grand fashion display but also a chance to spotlight historically overshadowed and marginalized fashion movements. From the exhibition theme and dress code to the personalities to watch for on the red carpet, here’s a quick rundown of the Met Gala 2025.

Theme: ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’
Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the Costume Institute’s Spring 2025 exhibition centers on “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” spotlighting the influence and style of Black men throughout history.

Dress Code: ‘Tailored for You’
Echoing the exhibition’s theme, attendees are expected to interpret the “Tailored for You” dress code in their own way. Expect modern takes on dandyism to dominate the red carpet, with playful menswear staples like hats, ties, canes, brooches, and pocket squares making stylish appearances.

Who to watch out for
The leaders of this year’s gala embody the spirit of Black dandyism. Joining Met Gala chairwoman Anna Wintour is basketball superstar LeBron James, serving as honorary chair. Co-chairs for 2025 include actor Colman Domingo, rapper A$AP Rocky, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, and singer-designer Pharrell Williams, Louis Vuitton’s creative director for menswear.

What makes the theme relevant
Black dandyism is a movement historically linked to sophisticated, self-expressive fashion. By honoring Black style pioneers, this year’s theme reclaims and celebrates a vital part of fashion history that has often been overlooked. “If we think about dandyism from a really different perspective, the style challenges social hierarchies by subverting expectations of how Black men should present themselves,” author Monica L. Miller told The Guardian.
How to watch
The official Met Gala livestream will air on Vogue’s YouTube channel on May 5, 2025, at 6 p.m. ET (that’s May 6, 2025, at 6 a.m. Philippine time). For real-time highlights and style recaps, follow Manila Bulletin’s digital platforms.
