These were among the concerns discussed by the Association of Local Social Welfare and Development Officers of the Philippines Inc. (ALSWDOPI) during its April 30 to May 3 national forum and convention in Metro Manila.
With the election season, ALSWDOPI National President Jhunleymar D. Abella said many social workers are caught in a crossfire as politicians meddle with government “ayuda” (aid).
“Pinaglalaban ng ating mga social workers na dapat sila ‘yung maka-assess ng mga client. Sino ba dapat tulungan, paano tulongan at anong gagawin pagkatapos tinulungan (Our social workers are fighting they should be the one to assess the clients. Who should be helped, how to help and what to do after extending help),” disclosed Abella.
Abella told Manila Bulletin in a phone interview that social workers across the country are hoping they should be able to do their mandates without pressure from politicians.
Another major concern was that half of the local government units (LGUs) across the country have not fully implemented the Magna Carta for Public Social Workers signed into law in 2007.
Abella noted that many social workers do not receive the stipulated benefits as provided by the law, including their hazard pay.
“We are calling other LGUs to fully implement the Magna Carta,” added Larry Petinglay, ALSWDOPI Board of Trustees and Antique Provincial Social Welfare Officer.
