Construction worker arrested for hitting cat with cudgel in Tondo
A construction worker was arrested when the cat he hit with a cudgel died in Tondo, Manila.
Marvin Arasa, 31 was arrested for violating Republic Act (R.A.) 8485, the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, as amended by Republic Act 10631.
Police said the incident occurred along Malaya Street, Barangay 125, Tondo, Manila.
The suspect, a construction worker residing in the area, was apprehended after allegedly attacking a pet cat belonging to Gemma Escultura, a 26-year-old resident of the same barangay.
According to the witness, the suspect struck the cat with a cudgel for no apparent reason, causing severe injuries that ultimately led to the animal’s death.
Tirzah Lim, President of Humane Philippines, an animal welfare organization, filed the complaint.
Upon witnessing the gruesome act, the pet owner immediately sought assistance from officials of Barangay 125, which led to the suspect's arrest.
The authorities recovered the weapon used in the crime and brought the suspect to the station by 11:35 p.m. for further investigation.
The suspect was later transported to the Gat Andres Bonifacio Medical Center for a mandatory physical examination.
The Manila Police District (MPD) is preparing the necessary documentation for the R.A. 8485 complaint, which will be filed before the Manila Prosecutor’s Office for inquest proceedings.
