Chargers turn back Flying Titans, near bronze

The Chargers drew strength from Eli Soyud and Ivy Lacsina particularly in the pivotal fifth set before banking on Grethcel Soltones’ soft spike in the end that sealed the win at the start of their best-of-three series.

Soyud displayed her all-around game anew and pumped in 24 points built on 20 kills, two blocks and two aces, while Lacsina sizzled in the offensive line by firing all her 20 points on attacks.

Despite losing the first two sets, Akari refused to bow down easily and slowly regained its momentum in the third frame with Soyud and Lacsina joining forces along with veteran setter Michelle Cobb.

Choco Mucho tried to keep it close especially in the deciding set, but Akari untangled itself from a 7-all deadline wit back-to-back kills to gain a slim 9-7 edge. The Flying Titans attempted to close the gap, but a costly service error from Des Cheng gave the Angels a comfortable 12-9 advantage and never looked back.

Soltones also powered the Chargers with 15 points, while Justine Jazareno took charge of the floor defense with an impressive 29 digs.

Royse Tubino and Sisi Rondina had 19 and 18 points, even as Isa Molde posted 10 points, but they were not enough to lift Choco Mucho to the victory.

Akari tries to close out its campaign with a podium finish in Game 2 on Thursday, April 10.
