Bataan 1st district Rep. Geraldine Roman took to Facebook on Sunday night, April 7 to send a message of intervention to vlogger Mocha Uson over her apparent disapproval of the latter's campaign jingle.
In her open letter, Roman came off as very warm and respectful to Uson, who first gained fame as a sexy dancer and actress. The lady solon even referred to Uson--a candidate for councilor in Manila--as her "sister".
"When I recently saw the video of your campaign jingle—'Cookie ni Mocha, ang sarap-sarap'—I felt a deep pang of sadness," Roman wrote. The line of lyrics basically mean "Mocha's cookie is very delicious."
"I couldn’t help but think: sayang (such a waste). Not because I believe you intended harm, but because I know you're capable of so much more. I know that you, like me, have fought to be taken seriously, to be seen not for our gender or bodies, but for the substance of our convictions," said Roman, a transgender woman.
Alluding to Uson's popularity, Roman said: "You have a platform that many dream of. People listen when you speak. They watch when you perform. And right now, they need us—especially women leaders—to lead with dignity, purpose, and clarity."
The congresswoman shunned the "objectification" of a woman’s body, which Uson's jingle arguably suggests through double meaning.
"The objectification of our bodies, kahit pa ito’y sinasadyang patawa o satire (even if it's for laughs or satire), chips away at the respect we’ve fought for. It reinforces the same narratives we’ve both worked so hard to change—that a woman’s worth is tied to her physicality, not her mind or mission," she said.
Roman asked Uson to "level up" the political discourse.
"Mocha, our people are hungry—not for cookies or catchy tunes—but for solutions, jobs, decent healthcare, and a future for their children. Ibigay natin ito sa kanila (Let’s give it to them). Let us level up our discourse and offer platforms that resonate with the hopes and dreams of the Filipino people."
Roman noted that while creativity is essential to connect with people in ways that are relatable and engaging, "Our creativity must never come at the cost of our message."
"We have said time and again that gender should not be used as a gimmick. Hindi ito palabas. Hindi ito biruan (This is neither for show nor for jokes)," said the majority bloc member.
As a parting shot, Roman told her sis Uson: "I believe you have the heart, the reach, and the strength to inspire real change. Let’s raise the level of political discourse and show our country what true leadership looks like—one grounded in integrity, respect, and purpose."
