DOT invests P12 M for sustainable tourism project in Capiz

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has invested P12 million in a sustainable tourism initiative in Capiz to boost the local economy while preserving the environment.

Implemented under the DOT’s Tourism Champions Challenge (TCC) program, the project will redevelop the Pawa Tourist Passenger Terminal into an eco-friendly hub featuring mangrove cottages and community-based rural tourism (CBRT) designed to create sustainable livelihoods for residents.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco led the groundbreaking ceremony, reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing projects that promote both environmental protection and inclusive growth.

“This initiative represents a step toward promoting sustainable tourism while creating jobs and opportunities for our people,” Frasco said.

The Municipality of Panay will manage the project, while the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) will oversee infrastructure development.

Panay Mayor Vicente Bermejo and Capiz Governor Fredenil Castro expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting its potential to drive long-term economic development in the province.

The DOT also announced plans to build a tourist rest area in Dumarao, Capiz, further reinforcing the province’s position as a key eco-tourism destination in the region.

Through this investment, the DOT aims to strengthen Capiz’s tourism infrastructure while ensuring the conservation of its natural resources for the benefit of future generations.
