Senator Sherwin Gatchalian says Philippine authorities must bring to justice the local accomplice of the arrested Swedish national who was wanted for child rape in his home country.
"The Filipina facilitator who conspired with the Swedish national must be immediately tracked down and arrested," Gatchalian said over the weekend.
"Anyone who enables the abuse and exploitation of minors is just as guilty and must face the full extent of the law," he said.
"Hindi dapat maging pugad ang Pilipinas ng pang-aabuso ng mga kabataan (The Philippines must not become a hotbed for child abuse)," added the senator from Valenzuela City.
Earlier, local law enforcers in Pampanga caught the 55-year-old foreign suspect, who had reportedly victimized a 10-year-old.
Gatchalian said the arrest was "yet another warning that child trafficking continues to threaten the safety of Filipino minors".
"I commend the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) and the Bureau of Immigration (BI) for thwarting a potential case of child trafficking," he said.
"I urge the BI and police authorities to tighten border controls to prevent the entry of sex offenders into the country and to strengthen information-sharing mechanisms with other nations," added Gatchalian.
