'Panahon na naman...': PNP advises public to stay safe, be wary of drowning incidents during summer break

As family and friends have started planning for the dry season break, the Philippine National Police (PNP) issued a reminder to take additional security measures when going to visit beaches and other swimming spots amid cases of drowning incidents during April to May period.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said parents and even those in friend groups must observe safety measures to ensure that their well-deserved summer getaway would not end in tragedy. 

“We want everyone to enjoy the holiday season, but it is crucial that we all take safety seriously. Whether at the beach or in any public area, let us make sure we’re watching out for each other and following safety guidelines,” said Marbil.

Citing PNP data, Marbil said they recorded 125 cases of drowning in 2023 and 90 cases in 2024.

For 2024, he said the 90 cases occurred in April to May period and led to the death of 94 people.

The highest numbers were reported in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) with 25 cases and Ilocos Region with 23.

Marbil earlier said that they will be deploying at least 40,000 policemen across the country as part of the PNP Ligtas SUMVAC (summer vacation). 

He said part of it is the coordination with the local government units (LGUs) and other law enforcement agencies to enhance safety measures, increase patrols, and provide public advisories to help prevent accidents. 

The PNP continues to encourage the public to remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, and always stay alert while enjoying their time outdoors.

“We all want to enjoy our holidays, but safety should always be a priority. The PNP is here to ensure security with our tourist police deployed across various beach resorts and tourist spots. However, we must not forget that our personal safety also depends on the precautions we take,” said Marbil.

He said the PNP's presence will be felt in high-traffic tourist destinations, particularly along the coastlines, where vacationers flock to relax.
