The Honda BR-V 1.5 S CVT, the most basic CVT-equipped variant in Honda Cars Philippines' seven-seater crossover lineup, proved itself capable during a demanding round-trip drive from Metro Manila to Botolan, Zambales.

Over approximately 500 kilometers of expressways, national highways, and local roads in hot summer weather, the vehicle delivered consistent performance on a 4.5-hour outbound trip via NLEX and SCTEX and onto the national roads that lead north through the western coast of Luzon. Averaging 11.8 km/l, the BR-V 1.5 S CVT offers real-world efficiency for practical-minded buyers.
Design and aesthetics

At first glance, the S CVT maintains the general silhouette of the second-generation BR-V, but features visual distinctions from its higher-tier VX and V siblings. It shares the same 17-inch alloy wheel design as the other variants, while standard LED headlights with DRLs enhance its look. However, it lacks the silver side-skirt cladding, chrome accents, and roof rails available on its higher-trim brethren.

The gloss black front grille adds sophistication to its utilitarian aesthetic, shaping the vehicle's face effectively. Inside, the cabin is straightforward yet functional, utilizing durable black plastics and fabric seats. Although there are no soft-touch surfaces, the fit and material quality remain creak-free and consistent with Honda's standards for durability and maintenance.
Performance and handling

The BR-V is powered by a 1.5-liter DOHC i-VTEC four-cylinder engine, producing a class-leading 121 PS at 6,600 rpm and 145 Nm of torque at 4,300 rpm. Paired with a CVT, the S variant responds adequately during overtaking and highway cruising. On inclines and while navigating Zambales' winding roads, the drivetrain remained composed, though deliberate throttle input was necessary. Dropping the shifter in 'S' mode noticeably sharpened throttle response, boosting confidence during uphill overtaking.

While not particularly brisk, the linear power delivery and low-end responsiveness contribute to an easygoing drive. The suspension tuning absorbs ruts and undulations on provincial roads, though sharper impacts are more noticeable due to lighter damping materials. Steering is light and predictable, making the vehicle manageable even in narrow barangay streets and tight parking spaces. Braking performance is impressive for the vehicle's size, even with four occupants and summer gear stored in the trunk with the third row folded.
Technology and features

As an entry-level variant, the BR-V 1.5 S CVT proudly features a 7-inch touchscreen audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This infotainment unit is the same as that in higher variants, pairing easily with devices and offering clear touch response. Audio is delivered through a four-speaker system, down from the six-speaker setups of the upper trims. Manual air-conditioning with a digital display provides straightforward cabin cooling, complemented by rear air vents for second-row passengers. Safety features include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Hill Start Assist (HSA), a reverse camera with guidelines, and ISOFIX anchors. While the S CVT lacks Honda Sensing and Honda LaneWatch, it does include remote engine start, a welcome feature during these hot summer days.
Comfort and practicality

The BR-V’s three-row configuration accommodates seven passengers, though the third row is best suited for children or shorter adults on longer drives, typical for this size of MPV. The first and second rows offer decent support and adjustability, with the driver benefiting from a manual height-adjustable seat.

The breathable fabric upholstery is easy to maintain, which is advantageous for this tintless unit. Interior storage solutions, such as cup holders, door pockets, and rear seatback pockets, are mindful design touches that enhance daily usability. Cargo capacity is a strong suit, especially with the third row folded. Although the third row does not fold flat, the load floor expands enough for large bags and gear. Folding the second row provides even more space for longer items, making it practical for family outings.
Fuel efficiency and environmental impact

For a naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a CVT, the BR-V 1.5 S delivers commendable efficiency. During the trip, which included extended highway cruising, mountain-road climbing, and slow-moving urban traffic, the vehicle achieved an average of 11.8 km/l. This aligns with expectations for a seven-seater crossover without hybrid assistance. The 42-liter tank was sufficient for the journey, requiring only one refueling stop for the entire loop.
Verdict

The Honda BR-V 1.5 S CVT is priced at ₱1,155,000, compared to the 1.5 V CVT at ₱1,295,000 and the top-spec 1.5 VX CVT with Honda SENSING at ₱1,395,000. The 1.5 S CVT variant we tested stands strong as a no-frills, efficient, and spacious seven-seater crossover. While it lacks some visual and tech upgrades found in its more expensive siblings, it excels in the essentials: comfortable seating for a large family, decent ride comfort, respectable fuel efficiency, and Honda's baseline safety features. For buyers prioritizing space and reliability over extra features, the BR-V 1.5 S CVT presents a compelling choice.
