Large parts of Visayas, Mindanao, and Palawan are expected to experience rainy weather on Labor Day, May 1 due to the combined effects of a low pressure area (LPA) and Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
As of 3 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, PAGASA weather specialist Rhea Torres said the LPA was estimated 805 kilometers east of southern Mindanao.
While the weather disturbance remains less likely to develop into a tropical cyclone, it is still embedded within the ITCZ, which will continue to bring rain to some parts of the country.
The ITCZ occurs when winds from the northern and southern hemispheres converge, which create coditions favorable for the formation of rain-bearing clouds.
Torres explained that in the coming days, the LPA is expected to move closer to land.
By Thursday, May 1, Visayas, Mindanao, and Palawan are likely to experience widespread rain due to the trough or extension of the LPA and the ITCZ.
These rains could persist until the weekend, Torres warned.
She advised residents in affected areas to remain vigilant for the possibility of flooding and landslides, particularly in low-lying and mountainous areas.
Meanwhile, the rest of Luzon is expected to experience hot and humid conditions, especially during the midday and afternoon hours.
Torres added that rainfall in Luzon will likely be due to localized thunderstorms.
