Rainer Maga followed the path of his former teammate and fellow guard Noy Remogat after parting ways with University of the East to transfer to University of the Philippines, the State U announced Wednesday, April 30.

Maga, 23, opted to bring his act to the Diliman-based squad, a decision that was also made by Remogat in the early part of 2024.
The 6-foot floor general was one of the key contributors -- along with Precious Momowei, Weilo Lingolingo, Ethan Galang and John Abate -- for the Red Warriors who fell short in the Final Four race of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball last year.
Prior to its exit, UE had a promising first-round campaign with five wins against two losses, but ultimately failed to advance to the semifinals as it succumbed six times in its last seven games in the latter part of the season.
There, the Davao City native put up a decent statline of 8.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists, including a 40-percent three-point shooting in 22 minutes of play.
Maga and Remogat’s addition will be a big boost for the Fighting Maroons as their star guard JD Cagulangan already completed his collegiate duties and is currently playing for the Suwon KT Sonicboom in the Korean Basketball League (KBL).
With Remogat now eligible for UP’s title defense bid this Season 88, Maga, meanwhile, must serve a one-year residency before he can suit up for the Goldwin Monterverde-mentored crew in Season 89.
