Power reliability gets boost as Meralco completes several substation projects

Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has announced the upgrade of its substation in Bonifacio Global City, a move aimed at addressing the increasing power demand in Taguig City and parts of Makati.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 30, Meralco detailed the expansion of its Fort BGC 2 Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation through the commissioning of a new 83 megavolt ampere (MVA) power transformer and a 34.5 kilovolt (kV) GIS.

This project, backed by a capital expenditure (CAPEX) budget of ₱226.49 million, is set to serve select residential areas within the two cities, alongside key establishments such as the Department of Energy (DOE), St. Luke’s Medical Center, the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC), Market! Market!, and Serendra.

Meralco also highlighted other network improvements made during the first quarter, including the expansion of the 115 kV-34.5 kV Malinta GIS substation. This ₱188.41 million investment is expected to boost energy capacity to meet the growing demand in Valenzuela and Malabon, ensuring a stable power supply for its consumers, particularly those with critical electricity needs like Manhattan Rubber Plastic Manufacturing, St. Jude Academy Valenzuela, Johnson Manufacturing Co. Inc., First Rubber Manufacturing Co. Inc., and Atlas Metal Production Manufacturing Co. Inc.

Furthermore, the ₱268.84 million Mesaland 115kV - 34.5 kV substation was activated within the first three months of the year. Its operations are intended to address the increasing power load in Sta. Rosa, Cabuyao, and Calamba in Laguna, as well as Silang and Tagaytay City in Cavite. Beneficiaries of this upgrade include Ayala Malls Nuvali, Hacienda Sta. Elena, Georgia Club Augusta, Mesa Homes Village, Adventist University of the Philippines, and The Medical City South Luzon.

Froilan Savet, First Vice President and Head of Networks at Meralco, emphasized the importance of these upgrades in enhancing power reliability in areas experiencing rising power demand. He stated, “With these three projects, we are effectively providing additional capacity to support local and rural areas. Service reliability in the area is being surveyed.”
