De La Salle University displayed steely nerves and denied University of Santo Tomas in the fourth set, notching a hard-fought 23-25, 25-20, 30-28, 29-27 win in their playoff game to clinch the No. 2 spot in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena Wednesday, April 30.

Fueled by their heartbreaking loss last year, the Lady Spikers played their hearts out and frustrated the Golden Tigresses to take the semifinal bonus behind their defensive masterclass off 20 blocks.
“This playoff was such a big opportunity for us despite everything that happened in the elimination round,” said Shevana Laput, who impressed for La Salle with 22 points.
“Happy talaga ako sa pinakita ng team na gustong-gusto nilang makuha ‘tong game,” Amie Provido added.
It was a sort of redemption for the Taft-based squad as it could be remembered that La Salle failed to secure the semis bonus in Season 86 after finishing behind UST.
Semis games are set this Saturday, May 3, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum with La Salle tackling UST, and reigning champion National University facing Far Eastern University.
Men’s contests also will take place at the same date and venue.
Angel Canino, as expected, took charge as she pumped in 24 points built on 19 attacks, four blocks, and one ace with 10 excellent digs and 12 excellent receptions.
Alleiah Malaluan and Provido, who delivered timely hits in the crunch, added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
On the other hand, playmakers Julyana Tolentino and Mikole Reyes dazzled as they combined for 33 excellent sets.
Angge Poyos went all-around for UST after listing 24 points off 23 attacks and one block with 13 excellent digs and 12 excellent receptions. Reg Jurado poured in 11 points, while Cassie Carballo put up 28 excellent sets.
