Style Weekend: Filipino artist Inha Arceo on how painting can promote mental freedom

‘My art features expressive figures of women in bold, dynamic gestures, symbolizing self-love, healing, and hope.’

Life is a constant pursuit of things that bring us happiness. It can be as grand as a fulfilling career and a meaningful role in society or as simple as passion projects that allow us to enjoy, grow, and even heal.

All of these are encapsulated in Inha Arceo’s life as an artist. Her journey began at the age of three, taking art classes throughout her grade school years. Although she never received formal training, it was her late great-grandfather and late grandfather—both passionate painters—who inspired her to hone her skills.

It was during the pandemic that Inha transformed her love for visual arts into a platform that champions self-love and authenticity. Painting became a "safe space" for her to explore inner struggles that might be difficult to share with others.

“I believe that creating art can promote mental freedom—the ability to create without restraint,” Inha says. “I also feel that art can significantly benefit one's mental health, serving as an outlet for expressing emotions, reducing stress and anxiety, and ultimately boosting self-confidence.”

Since then, painting has evolved from being a personal outlet to a medium that has taken her across the world. Her works have been exhibited in Monaco and Madrid, earning international recognition for her ethereal, modern pieces. As she unveils her first solo exhibit, Inha chats with Style Weekend about the power of art in self-discovery, letting go of “bad petals,” and finding joy and positivity.

Can you share with us the story of your craft? How would you describe your aesthetic?
Over the years, my exploration of themes has continued to celebrate the powerful emotions of the human experience—many of which stem from my own personal journey.

My art features expressive figures of women in bold, dynamic gestures, symbolizing self-love, healing, and hope. My vibrant floral palette serves as a reflection of positivity and joy. These values have been the continuous driving forces behind my creative process.

You’re having your first solo exhibit in Manila this month. What is it all about?
In this exhibit, I joyfully reflect on what it truly means to “break free.” This collection of artworks is my whimsical and playful celebration of the bold courage it takes to feel comfortable in one’s own skin. Each piece is a vibrant tribute, brimming with hues of empowerment and charm, inviting viewers to embrace the essence of being truly human—united under my favorite phrase: Break Free.

What makes art or painting the perfect medium for you to share your mental health journey?
As an artist, I advocate not only for women’s mental health but for mental well-being in general. Through my artwork, I aim to raise awareness and promote safe, open conversations about personal topics related to individuality and authenticity.

This year, I launched a mental health advocacy initiative called The Petal Project on my Instagram account. I started this in the hope of breaking free from my own inhibitions—to learn, grow, and focus on the things that bring me joy while becoming a better person and living a meaningful life.

I originally created my account five years ago as a space to write down quotes on my artworks that helped me cope with my own internal battles. Now, I want to share my current experiences in the hope of connecting with someone who may be facing the same “bad petals”—their own inner struggles.

What do you usually do during the weekend?
My #StyleWeekend often involves working on my art when inspiration strikes. But I also love spending time outdoors with my loved ones, especially visiting Saturday or Sunday markets filled with great food and good vibes!

Inha Arceo’s first solo exhibit, “Break Free,” runs until April 13, 2025, at Rise Space Gallery in Makati City.
