Benitez said that the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has committed P200 million for the terminal renovation while the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) has pledged P200 million for the runway expansion.
Benitez said that he is personally ensuring the progress of the project despite the recent appointment of a new CAAP director general.
He emphasized that the airport upgrade is expected to take place this year and that he will continue coordinating with CAAP and TIEZA for the implementation.
Benitez said that the renovation will address issues like overcrowding and malfunctioning escalators and restrooms.
He said that CAAP will oversee the terminal’s design to ensure it is more spacious and improved.
The airport, situated in Barangay Bagtic, was officially inaugurated on July 13, 2007, before it was formally opened as an international-standard airport on Jan. 18, 2008.
