DSWD chief calls out political candidate for using solo parents in lewd joke
Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian criticized political candidates who use vulnerable groups as the subject of offensive jokes during their campaigns, following a viral video of a Pasig congressional candidate making a lewd remark about solo parents.
In a statement on Friday, April 4, Gatchalian urged candidates for the May 2025 elections to raise political discourse by focusing on meaningful dialogue instead of humor that undermines certain groups.
“Let's not underestimate the voters. They may laugh, but who says they will vote for you? Keep them engaged by telling them what you will do for them rather than making them the punchline of your jokes,” Gatchalian said.
He pointed out that solo parents, who are “real-life heroes,” face daily challenges in raising their families and should be respected rather than mocked.
“They raise their kids alone through sheer sacrifice. Let's not marginalize them further. As DSWD Secretary, I simply do not find this funny,” Gatchalian said.
He urged the candidates to focus on substance and respect during the remainder of the campaign.
“To engage the crowd, we have to explain what we can do for them not make them the butt of jokes. We should never degrade the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable,” he added.
