Veteran journalist Johnny Dayang shot dead in Aklan house

ILOILO CITY — Veteran journalist Juan “Johnny” P. Dayang was shot and killed on Tuesday evening in his house in Kalibo, the provincial capital of Aklan.

“He was declared dead on arrival,” said Police Capt. Aubrey Ayon, spokesperson of the Aklan Police Provincial Office.

Ayon, citing reports from the Kalibo police, said that the 89-year-old Dayang was watching TV when he a gunman entered his home in Barangay Andagao and shot him.

The gunman left onboard a motorcycle.

Motive in the killing is yet to be determined.

Dayang was a longtime president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI).

He wrote for several publications. He was a columnist for Tempo and Balita under Manila Bulletin.

Dayang also served in other media organizations, as president of Manila Overseas Press Club (MOPC) and director and board secretary of the National Press Club (NPC).

He was interim mayor of Kalibo after the 1986 EDSA People Power revolution.
