UP-Cebu graduate among fatalities in Negros clashes

BACOLOD CITY – University of the Philippines (UP)-Cebu alumna Jhon Isidor Supelanas, alias Dalia or Dee, was among those killed in a series of clashes between the military and the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental on April 27.

According to a Facebook post by the official school publication Tug-ani, Supelanas was a former communication student, a transwoman activist, and a student leader.

Supelanas joined the fact-minding mission investigating the Negros killings in March 2019 under “Oplan: Sauron” or the intensified campaign of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) against suspected NPA guerillas in Negros.

He joined the Nagkahiusang Kusog sa Estudyante in 2018 and served as coordinator of the National Union of Students of the Philippines-Cebu in 2020.

Supelanas was an executive committee member in reviving Anakbayan-UP Cebu. In 2021, he became the spokesperson of Kabataan party-list Cebu. He later served as chairperson of the UP Cebu University Student Council. 

Recognized for his leadership, he was nominated as UP-Cebu’s 38th Student Regent nominee – the highest student representation in the UP System. 

He dedicated his time as a volunteer teacher with the Save Our Schools Network Cebu Bakwit School and championed LGBTQIA+ rights, especially the passage of the SOGIE Bill.

As a communication student, he helped revive UP Cebu's CCAD student publication, Lanog, and served as assistant station manager at DYUP Sugbo in 2018 to 2019. 

The Army engaged remnants of the dismantled South West Front, Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros Cebu Bohol Siquijor (SWF (D), KR-NCBS), following reports of their presence in a farm house in the hinterland part of the village.

Col. Erwin Rommel Lamzon, spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division, said that they will have to check the exact address of Supelanas and his background. 

Lamzon said they will check why he was in the province. 

He said a farmer was wounded in the crossfire.

Lamzon said that the farmer was used as a “human shield” by the NPA rebels when they were apprehended by the troops in a farm house.

He said the farmer sustained injuries in the face from shrapnel and referred to a hospital here for a minor surgery.

Lamzon said they are not doubting the farmer who might be in the wrong place in the wrong time. 

He added that the farmer may be preparing for work when the firefight broke out.

Lamzon said that soldiers rescued and evacuated him from the farm house when the rebels left him.

He said that the bodies of three of the seven fatalities, including a high-ranking couple have  been claimed by their families.
