This developed as President Marcos and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim engaged in a phone conversation on Friday, May 2, ahead of Malaysia's hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits this month.
In an Instagram post, the President said he and the Malaysian leader exchanged views on how ASEAN can address present economic and security challenges.
"I look forward to continuing these discussions with our ASEAN partners at the Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, later this month," he said.
Trade matters
In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Anwar said he conveyed to Marcos that Malaysia can leverage its position to demonstrate its significance to the United States in global tariff negotiations.
"The US decision to delay the implementation of tariffs for 90 days has provided some relief, allowing for further discussions on related matters, particularly because of Malaysia’s strengths in certain types of products," he said.
Myanmar ceasefire
Anwar also informed Marcos of Malaysia's desire and call for the ceasefire in Myanmar to be extended to ensure that humanitarian aid can continue to reach the affected population.
"We were also in agreement that any form of assistance must be delivered without discrimination or restrictions," the Malaysian leader wrote.
Wishing success
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anwar said he wished President Marcos "success" in the upcoming midterm elections.
President Marcos has been actively campaigning for his 11-person senatorial slate. He last joined them in their campaign rally in Lucena, Quezon, on Friday.
